THE BEACON Museum in Whitehaven is to trial a new ‘quiet hour,’ when visitors can enjoy reduced sound and subdued lighting.
The harbourside attraction will run the scheme once a month for three months – from 10 am until 11am on the Sundays of February 6, March 6 and April 3.
The Beacon Museum’s Customer and Visitor Experience Manager, Heather Holmes, said: “We hope these sessions, which provide a calmer environment with fewer people, will be useful for anyone who needs it.
“The sound will be lowered on our interactive exhibits and our lighting will be more subdued.
“At the moment it is a trial to see whether there is any demand for a ‘quiet hour.’ If it is successful, we will look at how we can continue to offer this option.”
Visitors who come into the museum during the quiet hour are of course able to stay for the rest of the day, should they wish. Lighting and noise levels will return to normal at 11am.
Admission to the Beacon Museum during the ‘quiet hour’ remains the same as at other times. If someone needs to bring a carer in order to access the museum, the carer will receive free entry.

The Beacon Museum’s next Talking Tuesday event features photographer, Brian Cowling.
At 2pm on February 8, Brian will talk about his project to celebrate 50 years of the Cockermouth & District Civic Trust. This involved retaking pictures of Cockermouth originally taken in 1967. His photographs show areas which have remained unchanged, and others which have been transformed.
