As part of the BBC Civilisations festival, try out our Norse Kennings Quiz.
Kennings are words that describe things in very practical ways, and they were a typical feature of Norse poetry. Kennings combine two words to create an imaginative alternative to more common phrases. By linking words in this way, the poets were able to play and experiment with the rhythm, sounds and imagery of their poetry.
The famous classic literary text Beowulf contains over a thousand kennings.
