Who we are
Welcome to the Beacon Museum – five floors of interactive heritage, science and fun
Sitting tall and proud like a stunning white lighthouse overlooking the harbour of Whitehaven, the Beacon Museum traces the history of Copeland in the western Lake District.
An award winning museum, a finalist in the England for Excellence Awards in 2011, where the Museum was recognised as punching ‘well above its weight’.
The Beacon Museum is owned and managed by Copeland Borough Council, and we have been working with Sellafield Ltd since 2014. This collaboration has allowed us to develop the museum and work towards becoming a nationally significant visitor attraction. The Beacon Museum’s success has been attributed by Visit England to “imaginative and pro-active exhibits, changing exhibitions, lively interpretation, a brilliant quayside location and enthusiastic staff.”
Our Mission Statement
To enable everyone to explore Copeland’s rich and diverse history by collecting, preserving, interpreting and displaying artefacts for inspiration, learning and enjoyment.
