The Beacon Museum will host the spell-binding Sharmanka Merry-Go-World exhibition from 5 April – 1 June in the Harbour Gallery. This unique showcase, presented by Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre for the first time England, brings an extraordinary fusion of kinetic sculptures, music, and lighting to mesmerise visitors of all ages.
Founded by artist Eduard Bersudsky, Sharmanka has captivated audiences worldwide with its intricate mechanical sculptures that tell evocative stories through movement and sound. Originating in Russia and now based in Glasgow, Sharmanka’s work is renowned for its poetic and often dark narratives. However, Merry-Go-World introduces a playful and nostalgic dimension to Bersudsky’s artistry, transforming discarded machinery and scrap into mesmerising moving installations.
Sergey Jakovsky, Current Artistic Director of Sharmanka Kinetic theatre, said:
“In the UK, Merry-Go-World has only been shown in Glasgow, Scotland and two Scottish Highland venues. It has also travelled to an exhibition in Korea. But that’s it. So it’s certainly the first time it is coming to England. This touring set features some of Sharmanka’s latest work so has not had a chance to be exhibited elsewhere”.
Merry-Go-World is the third of Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre’s touring sets. It reflects a new appreciation for old craftsmanship, repurposing items that once had little value into pieces of artistic wonder. The Merry-Go-World machines embody a sense of joy, inviting visitors into a universe where old gears and carved figures come to life in a dazzling symphony of light and motion.
Admission to the exhibition is included with your museum entry or annual pass. However, visitors are encouraged to reserve their time slot in advance through The Beacon Museum’s website, as availability for same-day bookings is limited. Each session lasts 30 minutes, beginning with a 15-minute opportunity to explore the gallery and discover Sharmanka’s fascinating history, followed by a 15-minute kinetic performance.
Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:

This new exhibition brings a fascinating mix of art and engineering, blending artistic innovation and nostalgia with mechanical mastery. Visitors will be captivated by the craftsmanship and storytelling that really bring these sculptures to life. it a must-see for art lovers, history enthusiasts, and curious minds alike”.
