PILLAR 200
Celebrating 200 Years of Rock Climbing in England and Wales
31 OCTOBER 2026 – 12 FEBRUARY 2027
*Please note that the museum will be closed over Christmas – dates TBC*
Discover 200 years of climbing history in Pillar 200, a fascinating new exhibition celebrating the people, places and innovations that have shaped rock climbing in England and Wales.
The story begins on 9 July 1826, when shepherd John Atkinson climbed the Old West Route on Pillar Rock in the Lake District, in what is regarded as the first recorded ascent undertaken purely for the challenge of climbing. From this pioneering climb to the present day, explore how the sport has evolved through historic photographs, personal stories and remarkable objects from across the climbing community.
See how climbing equipment has transformed over the centuries, from pebbles and machine nuts used as protection in rock cracks to early climbing nuts, wires and prototype camming devices. Ropes, carabiners, boots and climbing shoes reveal the ingenuity and innovation behind modern climbing.
Featuring collections from the Mountain Heritage Trust, the Fell and Rock Climbing Club, Stephen Reid, the Abraham Brothers and leading names in climbing equipment, Pillar 200 celebrates the people and achievements that have helped shape climbing as we know it today. The exhibition also highlights the vital work of mountain rescue teams, including Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, whose work helps keep people safe in the surrounding fells.
Presented by the Mountain Heritage Trust, Pillar 200 marks the Beacon Museum’s first exhibition dedicated to climbing and mountaineering. Whether you’re a keen climber, a lover of Lake District history or simply curious about the stories behind this adventurous sport, there’s plenty to discover.
This exhibition has been made possible with support from UKClimbing, DMM, Needle Sport, The Climbers Shop, Joe Brown Shops, Beta Climbing Design, Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW), The Fell and Rock Climbing Club and the National Heritage Lottery Fund.
