This Saturday 15 February a new exhibition launches at The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven. ‘Tides of Innovation’ is a groundbreaking exhibition that explores West Cumbria’s far-reaching influence on the world. Curated by volunteer Mike James, this pioneering exhibition takes visitors on a journey through time, from the ancient export of Langdale axes to modern advancements in industry and technology.
The exhibition reveals how the region’s resources, people, and initiative have shaped global industries and cultures over thousands of years. Visitors will discover the remarkable 6,000-year-old production line of Langdale axes, once exported across the UK and Ireland, highlighting early trade and craftsmanship. Tides of Innovation also emphasises the themes of regeneration and renewal, showcasing how traditional materials like Herdwick wool and haematite are being repurposed for contemporary use. Engaging activities throughout the exhibition offer hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages, bringing the region’s history to life.
The exhibition also highlights how local specialist companies are driving innovation in response to the decline of heavy industries, showcasing creative hubs like ‘The Bus Station’ and ‘LEVELS,’ which provide vital support for both startups and established businesses. It illustrates how modern innovation, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit are shaping a bold, thriving future for the region. Additionally, the exhibition also features an inspiring display of creative work from Years 8 and 9 students at Whitehaven Academy’s Creative Curriculum™, celebrating the talents and creativity that will propel the region forward in the future.
Mike James, The Beacon museums volunteer curator of the exhibition said: “West Cumbria has a proud history of creativity, resilience, and forward-thinking. This exhibition not only celebrates our past but also looks ahead to the future, inspiring visitors to appreciate the region’s impact.”
Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, added: “West Cumbria has always been a region of innovation and progress, and Tides of Innovation is a fantastic way to showcase our history and future potential. I encourage everyone to visit and take pride in our local achievements.”
Tides of Innovation is open to the public at The Beacon Museum from Saturday 15 February and runs until 23 March 2025. Admission is included with standard museum entry.
In addition to the new exhibition, The Beacon Museum is also hosting a stunning exhibition up until the 30 March, celebrating West Cumbria’s rich industrial heritage through the eyes of some of its most cherished and accomplished artists.
