Tuesday 23 June – Caribbean and Virginia Trade Connections

Discover the deep secrets of Somerset House, hear the extraordinary story of Jamaican-born James Jones – survivor of the Battle of Trafalgar who later became known as Whitehaven’s “Indian King”

Tuesday 14 July – Public Health

Learn where a famous lion tamer spent his winters and explore the town’s 35 year struggle for clean water and sanitation that helped lead to Britain’s first Public Health Act

Find out about the quiet Whitehaven housewife who became a global ambassador for the Temperance Movement, and uncover how avoiding the Press Gang became an art form along the harbour streets.

A captivating journey through the people, places and untold histories that shaped Whitehaven. 

**Pre-booking is preferable but not compulsory. In the event of poor weather and the walk being cancelled an alternative talk in the Beacon may be provided.**
