Take a nostalgic journey through the lively pub heritage of Whitehaven at The Pop Inn – a special pop-up event hosted at The Beacon Portal on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May, from 10am to 4pm.
Inspired by the iconic “Ye Olde Inns of Whitehaven, 1846–1958” map, this pop up event brings to life the stories of 131 pubs that once formed the social heart of the town — only 15 of which still exist today. The event features a stunning 3D representation of the historic map, giving visitors a fresh and immersive perspective on Whitehaven’s vibrant past. From bustling alehouses to quiet corners where stories were shared over a pint, The Pop Inn offers a rare glimpse into the everyday life, character, and culture that defined these communal spaces.
Visitors can explore a visual display featuring all 131 pubs and their locations. The space also offers traditional pub games and activities, providing a relaxed and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.
Visitors can also view historic photographs of Whitehaven’s pubs, both in print and on-screen, while listening to recorded reminiscences from former landlords, licensees, and long-time pub-goers. Free tea and coffee will be available as guests are encouraged to share their own pub memories, helping to contribute to a growing community audio archive that captures the spirit of the town’s public houses.
Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said: “The Pop Inn is a fantastic celebration of Whitehaven’s pub heritage. Whitehaven’s pubs have always been more than just places to grab a drink — they were hubs of conversation, connection, and community. The Pop Inn brings that legacy to life in a way that speaks to both long-time locals but also those discovering Whitehaven’s story for the first time.”
